Our commitment to advocacy extends to the Texas State Legislature, where we work tirelessly to influence policies that affect retired public school employees. By public school employees collaborating with other retiree organizations and maintaining a presence at the Capitol, ARTA ensures that the voices of Austin's retired teachers, administrators, and support personnel are heard loud and clear. We advocate for sustainable pension systems, affordable healthcare options, and policies that recognize the invaluable contributions of TRS annuitants.
The Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) hosted the Day at the Capitol on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. Attending TRTA members met at the East Lawn of the Texas Capitol at noon for this impactful event! Austin Retired Teachers Association had a good turnout, and Craig Campbell, one of ARTA's legislative co-chairs, reserved a meeting room for us where members wrote postcards to legislators and discussed issues of concern to our members. Members also spent time meeting legislators and time in the gallery. The lines were long, but our spirits were willing. TRTA treated members to a delicious box lunch on the Capitol grounds accompanied by music.
The 2025 Day at the Capitol was a great success, but every member needs to stay involved. The 89th Legislative session is not over yet. Read below for TRTA Legislative Priorities. Contact your legislators regarding these priorities.
